Concept Explanation

Pelvic Bones

The pelvic bones form a large, basin shaped frame at the lower end of the backbone, to which legs are attached. The pelvic bones encloses the portion of our body below the stomach. It is formed by the fusion of three bones, the hip bones and the tail parts of the backbone, to form a large bony bowl. The thigh bones are attached to the hip bone.

Function of pelvic bones :-

(1) locomotion, as body weight is transmitted to the lower limbs through the pelvic girdle

(2) Childbirth, as the human neonate must pass through the birth canal, which lies within the pelvic girdle as the baby exits the body

(3) Support of abdominal organs which are held up by both the pelvic floor musculature and the pelvis itself.
